Developing resilient livelihoods in the drylands of Africa

Matt Kandelā€™s ā€˜Developing resilient livelihoods in the drylands of Africaā€™ was published this week as part of the Wilson Centerā€™s Africa: Year in Review 2018, an annual collection of short articles that reviews major trends and developments in Africa.   Kandel argues that more focus is needed on building the resilience of communities as ā€˜social and environmental factors such as increased climatic variability, large-scale commercial agriculture, urbanization, oil and gas extraction, and land privatization are straining traditional coping mechanismsā€™ for dryland peoples in Africa.  His piece along with others can be read here: https://www.wilsoncenter.org/publication/africa-year-review-2018
